Creative Markets in Europe
The Summer Programme aims to attract international students from all countries which are interested in the German language and society as well as economics and business related issues.
CONTENT
The Summer Programme includes four modules.
Business Strategies in the European Union
(incl. business field trips, 3 ECTS, 28 contact hours)
This module provides an introduction to the geographical determinants of Europe. The focus will be on economic developments, allocation of resources and geopolitical developments in Europe. Successful students will gain a general geographical knowledge of Europe and will; be able to identify major problems for economic development based on resources, climate, infrastructure, human resources etc. They will study the economic policy of the European Union, aiming at underdeveloped regions/ countries; identify regions underlying structural changes and discuss how to solve their problems and understand the main economic relations between the different nations in Europe. The theoretical part will be taught and delivered as an interactive lecturing, an additional practical part consists of business field trips to companies and institutions in the greater Cologne region.
International Marketing Management
(incl. case study, 3 ECTS, 28 contact hours)
Marketing topics like “Analysing the European Marketing environment”, “Market Entry Strategies” or “Pricing and Distribution” will be delivered and discussed by using a variety of learning methods, including a case study analysis. Based on a marketing oriented management view this course aims at exploring the role of marketing in a modern organisation that acts in a globalised world. Students will learn to analyse the company’s macro and micro environment, formulate business missions, targets and strategies – on an international level. Selecting an appropriate target group will be one of the major tasks of the students to be able to develop an effective marketing mix.
German Language & Culture
(incl. site visits, 2 ECTS, 20 contact hours)
Students will work with texts at a basic level (signs, posters, catalogues) and learn to make simple statements in everyday situations both in written (forms, postcards) and in oral form (introducing oneself, welcoming and saying goodbye, apologising, enquiring, agreeing and disagreeing, expressing likes and dislikes). The course aims at providing an intermediate level of German, enabling participants to cope with everyday communicative situations, mainly in a university setting, through simple language means. It focuses on the development of oral communication skills.
The German culture and society will on the one hand be part of the above mentioned text work and oral exercising. On the other hand students will take part at excursions to sights and points of interest in the greater Cologne region. By doing this they will gather further knowledge about the use of German language and about German culture and society.
Creative Industries Management
(incl. excursion, 4 ECTS, 38 contact hours)
This module is intended to enhance the participants understanding of the management of creative industries by focusing on crucial aspects affecting media management and on current practices utilized in dominant markets around the world. Firstly, key terms imperative for the understanding of creative industries’ management will be defined. Following there will be a focus on the economic, political and cultural contexts which have been influencing and shaping the industry as well as on the theoretical approaches utilized to analyse the effects of mass media on audiences and society. Emphasis will also be placed on clarifying current strategic management approaches in the media sector as well as on identifying current and future challenges and developments in the industry. This will be supported by a detailed analysis of practices in the film and TV sector. Within this context, the management of creative industries will be compared with the management of other industries and the possible implications of this comparison for business practices will be discussed. Formal input, class discussions, case studies, project work in groups, presentations and excursions will be the prevalent methods of input.

FEES
The fees for the Summer Programme are 1.780 Euro. They cover the tuition and application fees, certificate, costs for field trips and site visits, study material, service and support. Discount for CBS Students and students from international partner universities.
APPLICATION
Applicants for the CBS Summer Programmes should have studied in a business related Bachelor Programme for at least one academic year. English is language of instruction for all modules, thus sufficient English language proficiency is highly recommended in order to be able to follow the courses successfully. Please download the application form for the Summer Programmes. A recent transcript of records of your home university as well as a copy of your passport or ID card (photo page) form need to be enclosed with the application form.
Upon successful completion of the Summer Programme, all participants will be issued an official CBS certificate stating the content of the courses and the number of ECTS Credits acquired. Application deadline for the Summer Programme is 15 May.
