Deputy director of Julius Bär Bank - guest at the CBS Finance Club
On 7 October, Joachim Karuth, Deputy Director of the Swiss private bank, Julius Bär in Düsseldorf visited the Cologne Business School and held a speech for members of the Finance Club.
He started his presentation by introducing the Julius Bär Bank which is exclusively oriented towards consulting and looking after private clients. This year, Julius Bär was honoured as the best asset manager in the German-speaking region. At the end of June 2010, the bank managed client assets of 190 billion euros. Julius Bär has representations in about 40 locations; including Zurich, Dubai, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, London, Lugano, Milan, Monaco, Montevideo, Moscow and Singapore.
In his presentation, Joachim Karuth outlined the diverse investment possibilities. Apart from the most popular investment products such as gold, silver, raw materials, shares and bonds, he discussed two special investment forms, namely investments in material assets such as forests and art. When it comes to art, it became quite clear that an underlying love of art is a prerequisite for recognising true quality. If you have the necessary wherewithal to pay for a masterpiece, you can be sure of a safe investment. Here, long-term comparisons of price developments in the art market show a guaranteed appreciation. But the sums we are actually talking about became clear when Mr Karuth presented Pablo Picasso's painting "Nude, Green Leaves and Bust". This painting fetched US$ 106.5 million - a world record - at an auction early this year.
After the speech, Mr Karuth took the time for a lively discussion with the students during which the topics presented were deepened.
